Supposedly back in the 90s when Tomino was grappling with burnout over ~13 years of Gundam projects (1979 through 1993) he was simultaneously tired of Gundam but also unhappy that Sunrise was consulting others for new Gundam projects going forward in the 90s without him. He originally thought of Victory-G-W-X from 1993 to 1996 as a "downward spiral" since X ended in cancellation, I guess until Tomino returned to work on Turn A in 1999.

Later in about 2019 there is an interview not with Tomino but the director and producer of Gundam Narrative where Yoshizawa says:
>I’m going off track here a bit, but Tomino always has nothing but positive words for Imagawa Yasuhiro (director of G Gundam). Imagawa made a completely different kind of Gundam, after all. Tomino also saw the first episode of Wing Gundam recently and had nothing but praise for that as well. Seeing the scene where the character just comes out with, “I’ll kill you,” he said that was a fresh spin on drama

>He included it in the Turn A Gundam cabon, so he must have appreciated it on some level.
Well the intention seemed to be to put an definitive "ending" story on all of Gundam, so leaving out Wing would have been weird and driven rumors in the direction of "Why? Does he hate Wing? Does he not consider it to be Gundam? Is it too different? Why not G?" etc. That said, Tomino isn't personally responsible for every specific reference in Turn A or G-Reco, but apparently he also never watched even one episode of Wing until about 25 years after it came out so take that as you will.
