I truly think this is their overall goal. At least at the top level. The Machines say that they don't need the Humans to survive. It's becomes increasingly obvious that they're looking for some way to co-exist. I think this is specifically because the machines would be alone and therefore lonely since Humans are the only other sentient beings. Humans created them and gave them purpose. So while Humans showed great cruelty at one time, the Machines still want them to exist in some form and interact with them. The Architect believes that there's no way to co-exist long term with humans having full freedom since they will inevitably chimp out and fight again. The Oracle devises her plan to use a sort of religion to create that long term peace. She will have The One sacrifice himself to free the Humans and make peace between the two factions. Since it's religion, it should be able to last for centuries/millennia if cultivated right.
