Maybe our society is running with climate change as an excuse not to tackle (and even encourage) political and social aspect driving this collapse. I mean look at that paper. In the same move it shows climate change can indeed make civilizations collapse, it also tells us implicitly that climate change doesn't have to be man-made to happen.
I mean there is something collectively neurotic to the problem of climate change:

Perhaps we're insisting that climate change is man-made as the necessary mental gymnastics that allows society to put blame on itself, which from the inside consists in one part of society putting blame on another part of society.
