As someone who works at a recycling plant, I'll just lay it out. Nobody in charge of maintaining that shit will do so, even when it is a fiscally responsible choice. The most absurd example is conveyor belt skirting. The moment that wears out, everything goes to shit, and no matter how much you plead & beg, no higher-up will want to spend the couple hours needed to replace it, so shards of glass & plastic & dirt just rain off the belts forever, clogging up and damaging other equipment in an ever-cascading cycle of a fuckup. It always devolves into this and the ones responsible are never held accountable.

And I wish batteries were the worst of it. People will throw out fucking propane & acetylene tanks with zero reservation. People have accused me of being slow in the head because I no longer even flinch when a baler bursts into flames, and instead just continue running it so that the flaming material gets pushed out of the machine before it causes damage that will never get repaired because see above.
