I didn't give a damn about combat design all I was in were the environment, story and sound design. I ran from monsters, if there was something in a room with monsters barring access I'd calculate in a split second if the benefits from the item will outweight the bullet loss or health loss and decide then to fight or fly.
If I fly I memorize the room number and come back when I'm stuck and need new elements/clues for a puzzles.
That's how I used to play, though nowadays I'm so desensitized I'd just kill everything.
