This was my biggest complaint with modern mecha designs. They get greebled up to hell and back and I've seen it done countless times

Something about the limitations of old games meant the mechs could stay boxy and simple. Even today I find Earthsiege 2 very pleasing to the eyes, along with Front Mission 3.
