I vividly remember headphone manufacturers were happy Apple made this decision at the time because it allowed them to sell everyone more expensive bluetooth headphones as well.
This also helped companies like Sony and Samsung who coincidentally also sold headphones along with their phones.
This was seen as a "win win" from a profitability standpoint. Consumers didnt really mind in the long run either, because most people tend to prefer bluetooth earbuds over wired earbuds.
