It's an obsolete, non-versatile port used only for one specific thing, just like the PS/2 port. With the advent of wireless mice and keyboards, PS/2 was rendered redundant. Likewise, with the advent of digital audio and wireless technologies, the phone plug is no longer necessary. Why do you /g/ays insist in keep obsolete technology for the sake of it? So many other ways to get audio. By a USB-C headphone then, if you like cables so much!

The 3.5 mm audio plug, also known as the miniature phone plug or 1/8" jack, was developed in the 1950s. It is a smaller version of the older 6.35 mm (1/4 inch) phone plug, which dates back to the late 19th century and was originally used in telephone switchboards.

The 3.5 mm version was popularized later, especially in portable transistor radios in the 1960s and 70s, and became ubiquitous with the rise of personal audio devices like the Sony Walkman in the 1980s.

So, in short:

Invented: Around the 1950s
Popularized: In the 1970s–1980s with portable audio gear

Let me know if you want a timeline of all the plug sizes or their typical uses.

I have no idea what the mid-range is like, but the low-end prioritizes display and battery, while cheaping out on everything else (camera, SoC).
And their shit SoCs use less power, cause they can do less, so you stress the battery less. Low-end phones have the longest battery life.

They "die" by software updates that they can't run, not by hardware failure. So just don't update and debloat the phone and you have a device that lasts forever.

I am in their target group. And almost all of them give me an audio jack.
Meanwhile the target group of high-end-phone + audio jack doesn't exist.Someone who buys the newest most expensive fancy thing, will also buy a bluetooth headset, despite them having severe lower quality, and will accept the excuse of "audio jacks are too expensive to add to phones", because they don't know what is going on in the low-end anyway.

Bluetooth is worse. That is factual. It is limited by bitrate.
An audio jack is an analog signal to begin with.
And an native USB-C headphone has a DAC and then transpits the analog signal to your buds, so it can AT BEST only be the same quality as an audio jack. But it can be worse, because you have an USB protocol in between, that ads latency at the very minimum.

Again:
The upper limit, the BEST an USB-C headphone could deliver, is equal to an audio jack. Never better. That's simply impossible.

The real reason in addition to the DRM thing is this: Any device with one of these ports has an easy way to get data into and out of said device. For example, the "programming cable" for my crappy baofeng radio works that way. It transfers data over usb 2.0 -> a simple chip -> analog input/output.

By getting rid of this port you eliminate one method for getting data out of or into the device. Same reason why stuff like the Apple TV no longer come with a usb port. They don't want you being able to program your own device, gain control over it ("rooting" it) or letting your device interface with hardware that isn't intended to used with said device. Not being able to use any old set of crappy headphones so they can sell you expensive bluetooth/usb ones is an obvious ploy. But they're much more concerned about it being yet another hole into their walled garden. Lots of devices have been cracked into over the years by either using this port directly or snooping upon things flowing over it.

The retard above about PS/2 being obsolete is wrong as well. He obviously never owned a motherboard with faulty EFI chipset drivers. I have run across multiple motherboards that would be bricks if not for the option to plug in old PS/2 keyboard to access the BIOS.

USB-C is superior simply because it sends digital signals directly to a headphone instead of converting digital to analog so you can hear it on your BS audiophile headsets. It's really up to headset manufacturers to step up the game.

Not to any appreciable degree unless something's very wrong with your setup, and I've personally done the comparison. I even use my USB-C DAC on PC because it's so much better than motherboard audio with no noticeable downside.

Even USB 2.0 has the bandwidth for hi-fi audio, it's a perfectly fine port for headphones.

You just don't know what you're talking about. With a jack, conversion from digital to analog happens inside the phone, and depending on the device, the output may not be very good. With USB-C conversion from digital to analog will happen inside the headphones, which again, depending on the device, may not be good, but since audio companies specialize in audio, it's much better to leave that conversion for them to do, so, for logical and practical purposes, USB-C wins. There's zero reason to continue using a phone plug.

The DAC is never going to be the weakest link in the chain.
The usual FLACs you find has 48kHz sample rate with 16 or 24bit depth. That is puny compared to what even the cheapest hardware can handle.
If you think about it, your WiFi chip is sort of a DAC operating at 6 GHz, so why would 48kHz be a problem for anything?

Because the margins on wireless earbuds are insane.
A lot of lower end models still have the headphone jack because poorfags are likely to not buy wireless earbuds as you've probably been able to tell if you've used public transportation in the last few years.
But if you're willing to spend a grand on a fancy phone, you're probably also willing to pay a hundred bucks for a set of wireless buds from the phone manufacturer that cost less than ten to manufacture.
Sony and Samsung are the odd ones out here. Sony is already big enough in the audio world where the additional sales they got from removing the headphone jack a few generations ago didn't increase their wireless earbuds sales at all, but instead lowered their phone sales to they put it back in.
Samsung owns JBL which is the other big wired buds brand but they've got heavy market segmentation to the point where most people don't even know Samsung owns JBL, so the higher-end Samsung phones can still be used to effectively sell Samsung Galaxy Buds.

That has not happened to me. The battery management is absolutely sublime in airpods. It shows on my phone when the charge of the case is low, so I just charge it (wirelessly too btw) when it shows 20-30% left. I don't use buds a long time in one session, so most I or for that matter anyone will do, is about 5 hours which it can do just fine. It charges amazingly fast in the case in a short time, so practically every time when I take them out of the case they are fully charged. I use them a lot every day so I feel like I count as a power user.

I used to have the WX1000XM4 and I forgot what the Sennheiser equivalent was called and they were alright but in fluidity just generations behind Airpods. I got them all for free in my last profession where I was given them to review them. Back them the first Airpods that came out didn't have noise cancellation so I tested them, was surprised by the sound quality and overall experience but only after the Pro was released I switched 100% on them. I love that I can switch devices seamlessly and it always figures out the right device, I like that both buds have a mic. I love how they sound, very neutral and balanced (was worried they would be like beats which are horrible), the excellent noise cancellation, small size and weight, good fitment. Everything. There is a reason all the bugs copy the Airpods design, there is not a better one in existence.

In 2015 I had my SE215's and later the better ones too and I was a hard line cables only type of guy but now that the truly wireless alternative is available at an affordable price and it's as good as it is, no point going back to cables with the downsides of cables. I also reddit spaced my post because I figuredit would upset people even more.

Ports break when they are used often, especially when that use involves bouncing around in a pocket. C may be more robust than micro or mini was but they still break. Both of my brothers have broken theirs using DACs and had to get new phones since they could no longer charge.
The DAC will use more power since it is an external board that has to comply with USBC power standards. This at least means it must ask for 5V to then power it's little board. The phone must provide this voltage in which there is always loss. An onboard all in one chip can run at a lower voltage and can be highly controlled by the designer to guarantee it uses as little power as possible or be shut off entirely when not in use.

I hate bluetooth as much as the next guy, but that's bullshit. You can stream lossless music wirelessly no problem. There is no technical reason why it has to be worse, it's just that big jew has decided that we don't need good audio quality. The reason why they're overpriced (even when accounting for the DAC and bluetooth capability) is because the removal of the headphone jack was a ploy to sell more technological garbage in the first place. It's only natural that {meme product introduced solely for profit} is itself overpriced.

Real answer:
It doesn't gel well with modern safety requirements. It's a shoddy design, the contacts move over incorrect positions by design. This can lead to shorts. Which is why it requires additional circuitry to ensure safety and the myriad ratings that smartphones need.
It's easier to get rid of it.

There's speculation that Apple went out of their way to kill it to disrupt square (who was seen as a valid competitor to the then new ApplePay).

I vividly remember headphone manufacturers were happy Apple made this decision at the time because it allowed them to sell everyone more expensive bluetooth headphones as well.

This also helped companies like Sony and Samsung who coincidentally also sold headphones along with their phones.

This was seen as a "win win" from a profitability standpoint. Consumers didnt really mind in the long run either, because most people tend to prefer bluetooth earbuds over wired earbuds.

I think it's because it's harder to waterproof the device

usbc ports can actually detect moisture and stop working to prevent electricity shorts
still wish they gave us 2 usbc ports minimum, so I can charge while actually using the other port for things

I didnt like usbc headphones at first, but it's ok because it gives you proper play/pause/volume button control which was spotty because of the different ways 3.5" headphone ports worked

It's even worse when the Bluetooth is in your vehicle because often, you have to turn the entire car off to try it all over again.
What really gets me is that the Bluetooth in my 2019 Equinox is nothing but trouble, with a ridiculous audio delay whenever it does actually happen to work, but the aftermarket Bluetooth in my old van works just fine. In fact, my other car doesn't even have Bluetooth, just a USB Bluetooth dongle, and that one even works fine compared to the equinox.
I just don't understand it. The car turns on, the radio turns on, the Bluetooth should connect to the phone. But it doesn't. Why???
