Mae Sai is one of very few Thai cities with urban development on steep hillsides. You can walk or motorbike up to a Thai military base on a ridgeline that marks the border with Myanmar. It's a beautiful climb and a great view at the top as well. There are hiking trails in the area used by military patrols. Few white foreigners visit Mae Sai.

Chiang Saen looks worth a visit as well.
