Chiang Rai proper is a little disappointing. More sprawling than a Dallas suburb, and the city center is overrun with tourists going to and from Chiang Mai. I liked Mae Sai better, although it is full of traffic as well. Lots of Burmese cross into Mae Sai to go shopping. The Burmese girls can be very cute, but don't seem friendly toward white guys. Chiang Saen looks worth a visit as well.

They're boring, depressing, underdeveloped, poor, neglected and just depressing. A backpacker in their late teens/early 20's with a trust fund might find these places intriguing, but most working adults looking to just relax and unwind from the daily grind of life in the West will not. I think an aspect that would change the equation is if you send your kid(s) to bangkok private school or even USA boarding school and get them back into the USA path.

somewhere like Mộc Châu District in Vietnam or even Son La (a city of a little over 100,0000 people).

These kind of places are 6hr drives from a globohomo airport, zero multinational corp, but are entire operational cities that function in their own way. I sort of couldn't believe some of the kino I found while exploring northern vietnam for 3 weeks.
Sapa was easily the dumbest and worst place and it hits you in the first 10 seconds when some faggot rides up to you shilling a hotel.

I only spent a day or two in the town before continuing my moto tour, but it's amazing to see something so comfy and functional essentially exist in the boonies of SEA. That they manage to build and operate all that in an area physically far out from Western world and economy. I saw students preparing boat lanterns to push down a river.

There is/are hotels, there are places to eat food, there is a hospital. Nothing crazy going on, but it seems that they function peacefully. Life goes along. There is nothing spectacular about it, but there is also no obvious visual chaos and subhumans like the equivalent town in, for example, philippines (or I bet brazil)

Part of me wishes I could teleport right back, freeze time and "try it out" living there for months on end. I wonder who I would meet, if I'd find high a high level bilingual speaker, a small friend circle, etc.

6.5hr and (light) mountain road travel from a major airport is serious separation from the outside world. I'm not even sure there are many areas one could do that in USA while also not being in the middle of nowhere desert like the stretch hours east of Vegas Nevada. This town IS that far out there and somehow has 3-4x the population of my hometown clustered within its comfort.

I wasn't sure quite how to articulate what I saw and felt there, but I'm glad I got the message across in an appreciable way. As you can see from the images, the city butts right up against these green mountains, a river flows through, they have some traffic circles to manage flow. A building or two hint of modernity in their styling, while in no way dominating the scene.

Things are largely residential, functional, but nice enough.

To speak of other places worth pilling on: I enjoyed the people in Nam Dinh and many spoke english. The city is not as isolated nor naturally beautiful and is within the blast radius of some tourism crossfire while not right in it.

My other "sleeper pick" that was visually comfy-in-memory was "Thái Nguyên". And if someone is out there already, Tuyên Quang is just another 1hr40min to get to and offered a simple peaceful small city experience.

These tier 2, but still populated, vietnamese cities are some of the comfiest things I've ever seen on the planet. I toured around in 2017, so idk if they're getting globohomo'd but their physical isolations/language barrier offer some natural resilience.
