It's explained in a silly way, but basically they work like some sort of ant colony. They have a pecking order and some understanding of protecting each other, but other than that all bets are off. They eat humans because their unnamed ancestors did and that's where the tendency to mimic behavior that triggers human compassion comes from. They descend from mimics basically.
Who knows how you go from that to a super intelligent magical beast, I guess it's one way to develop intelligence for a non-social animal.
It's not that bad. Technically a human could be vegan and survive but we do instinctively crave meat so of course we farm animals and such, and our ancestors also did that. It's a niche like another in a fantasy world.
