I will say that when he actually showed up in the movies he's probably the best part of the entire Hobbit trilogy. Cumberbatch does a really good job playing him, and a lot of his dialogue with Bilbo is lifted straight from the books. And what they DID add actually worked, unlike some of the additions that trilogy made, like that terrible romance between Kili and Taurien.
In terms of live-action, at least, he's probably the best dragon that's ever been put on film.
