Andy was his best and only friend and he had the bright idea that if he murdered anyone he perceived as harming Andy, starting with his bullies and working his way up to his mom, that'd make him an even better friend

I know it was a bad movie and everybody hated it but it had the desired emotional effect on me, the whole time I was like "He's a saint, I hope he wins"
It's even played for tragedy when Andy kills him at the end and he's just completely confused and betrayed by it
