For extra humiliation, he took a fat shit on Rei by destroying that connection. He genuinely has contept on Japan fanbase for liking Rei (a character that especially in Rebuild is presented as supportive to Shinji as well as the other way around), thinking people like submissive women, which is ironic considering he has a mommy fetish.
