Reminds me that Arx Libertatis removed detail textures because "it caused closer objects to be darker and caused other artifacts, which was noticeable when moving." I wish they'd kept it in as an optional setting and then implemented whatever alternative they wanted, but for now you have to build from an alternate branch if you want detail textures or anything like them.
