How much of a waste of time and how bad videogames are for you depends on what you are playing and how much time you are devoting to it.
I'll go months without video games during the semester but then I'll binge a weekend playing civ.
Nobody would say that chess is bad for you and there are many games that require the same amount of cognitive effort/ability if not more and I would argue those games aren't bad for you.
Again depends on how much and what.
