Overt negativity almost always usually indicates some sort of inherit biases being present. Otherwise, there is no source of emotional distress.
A very simple example that fits here would be "I don't like characters who do XYZ, and because I don't like XYZ, I don't like this character".
That's a biased viewpoint. And many of us hold those biased viewpoints, naturally.
But by doing that, you aren't attempting to measure or discuss the characters traits, or why they are the way they are, or what those traits are supposed to inform to the player.
It's just sweeping them under the rug categorically with an empty label. That's not usually what someone does when they want to pretend to be taken seriously.
