FF13 took me a long time to get into. I remember I played it and felt disappointed, but I kept coming back every few months to try it again and get a little further. The characters kept throwing terms like c'ieth, l'cie, and fal'cie around, so I was pretty confused about what was going on most of the time. Some occasional towns or something to get a break from the action and get some exposition on the setting and stuff would've been nice to have. I think at some point I just looked up the FF wiki and did a bunch of reading to finally understand things. I was also playing the game wrong. I'm used to having consequences for dying in battle, and I also just really hate dying and losing battles, so I played the game very cautiously at first, which is the wrong way to play. There are no consequences for dying whatsoever (you just get teleported right back where you were before you entered the fight), and you start each fight at full and perfect health, so you should be playing very aggressively and taking risks to finish battles as fast as possible to get the best score you can at the end of a fight (and move the story along at a better pace). It's just not the way I'd usually play a JRPG, so it took me a while to play the game the way the game wanted me to play it. It also takes WAY too long for the game to open up stuff like classes so you can experiment with different team comps and play around with the mechanics of the game. Think you're like 3/4 through the game already when the tutorials finally stop. I did eventually really like the game once I figured out what was going on with the setting and story and once I figured out how to actually play, and I've actually played through it multiple times now, but it took me so long to warm up to the game I don't feel like I can recommend it to anyone else. The visuals are still stunning at times though. Both 13 and 15 needed more towns and conversation NPCs imo.

The thing about VII is that Tifa didn't originally exist and neither did Zack. Zack actually didn't exist until very late in development, and yet pretty much the entire mystery of the game hinges on Tifa and Zack. It's very haphazardly slapped together. Makes me wonder what the original "detective" draft of VII was like, or what earlier drafts of VII was like (before Tifa and Zack) or what VII was like back when everyone died near the end of the game except for the characters with the highest relationship points. I feel like a lot of the coherence of the mystery of the plot was lost somewhere in there by forcing Tifa and Zack to be characters in the first place.

Well, I'm an oldfag. FFVI was not the first FF game that I played, FFI was. I played the games as they released, and when FFVI released I did not feel as if it did anything special. I still don't like it very much. I think it desperately needs a remake.
