Actual amateur shitter here, I'm firmly in the camp of "if you are thinking of spending five figures on a sim rig maybe buy a real racecar instead". That said, my racing budget is typically around $10k/year for 5-6 weekends and I try to do things as close to free as possible doing all the work on my car myself, sleeping in the trailer, and using tires well past their "fast" lifespan. Karting was cheaper but only when I was racing the 4-stroke briggs engine karts. The cool 100mph+ shifter karts cost about the same as racing a car.
I would budget at least $5k in startup costs and $5k/year to make a decent go at racing 4-stroke karts in your local club league. It's lots of fun, highly recommended. Sim racing does not give me anything close to the same feels as actually going racing in riol loif.
