Risen. As a crazy person, who refuses to play on anything but the hardest difficulty, this game throws me for a fucking loop. I can't get a read on the AI. Most other games aren't like this for me, for example in Gothic 1+2 eventually you can memorize the enemy attack patterns and blow through them on a second play-through with the first sword in the game, because you're so competent with the mechanics. In risen it's not like this. Sometimes it's as if the game decides that you're dying, a switch flips in the enemy's head and they suddenly become far more competent, blocking/dodging all of your attacks and strafing behind you to combo you. Sometimes they derp out and don't try to block. Whatever they've done with the AI in that game is enthralling. Every sword fight is unique. You could reload the same fight after dying and the enemies are going to behave completely differently to the last time and they're probably going to kick your ass. Late game I'm finding that I have to reload 10+ times to beat one encounter and that's a good thing. Whoever programmed the enemy AI when it comes to sword fighting in this game was a genius beyond compare. Unfortunately it falls apart when you throw arrows and spells into the mix but if you're playing the game as a swordfighting game it's one of the best on the market.
