Personally I've always interpreted it as being a failed coping mechanism from dudes who are way too emotionally sensitive and can't control themselves, so their only way of handling it is to try to constantly obfuscate what they actually believe so that if they ever get insulted for something they like they won't suffer any psychic damage from it
Basically it's (fake) power and control through a lack of commitment
