I like Deltarune's writing fwiw and I'm not that anon. I've been writing stories (mostly porn) for over twenty years and think I'm quite good at it, but you'll have to take my word for it.

Anyway, my example is Persona 2: Innocent Sin. The plot is legitimately the only thing that pulled me through that game and the ending will stick with me forever. The gameplay is ass, the music is fine but I don't remember any of it besides the opening song. The characters are fun, have history with each other, have chemistry, and some depth.

It could be better honestly, but every text box is time spent not playing the game so the more story it's got, the more time you spend not playing the game. That's a consideration you don't have to make when writing a novel or television. Some people aren't there for the story and most devs will cater to those type of gamers or try to reach a broader audience. Toby demonstrably understands that the writing is a huge part of the appeal here and in Undertale. I don't think he'd even make the game if he didn't have a plot and characters he liked—and yes, the creator's investment in their own characters does indirectly make the writing better.

My point is it's not worth making a salient point on /v/ because you're going to get told off; I felt like giving you an example and some discussion anyway.

As someone who read it twice (Once while it was actively updating, and a second time a few years back for nostalgia purposes when someone linked that one compilation of it) it's amazing at how much squandered potential there is. Everything right up to Cascade is perfect, but Act 6 and onward are such a drag it kills any motivation to ever go back to it again.
