your toaster is a simple machine and you can physically see inside of it. it isn't alive, it's a tool.
it's not about being "smart", but being complex. the more stuff goes on inside a sealed container like your skull, the more alive something is. alive does not mean "intelligent" or even "sapient" because to have intelligence or sapience the machine would have to have something like a human brain to remember things and and be self-cognizant, which it can never have unless a human builds that for it.
thus a machine soul exists in symbiosis with a human one, a machine has no purpose without a user and thus has no soul without a human's soul with which to bond.
