Historically speaking, most if not all anti-piracy means (that aren't just improving your service) still end up being intrusive to actual people in some manner. Ninty has already stripped features from past consoles onto later ones for fears of hardware exploits - the internet browser being the most obvious. Not insignificant, considering they had a surprisingly competent one on the Wii U for its time.

The game key system certainly made things more complicated than they need to be, and is pretty much what the Xbone tried to do over ten years ago including the dumb game sharing thing.
