Beyond needing timeframes to match-up to have Garion show up, I think making Hong Lu past his youth was a good call.
People in their youth do stupid shit, but Hong Lu has carried this apathy with him for a long time, it's tragic how long he's bottled up his feelings and how much it took for them to come flowing out. Kids these days adopt all sorts of inane believes and discard them as they grow more worldly but Hong Lu has held this depressing view for over a decade and has fully surrendered to it.
