Also, there's plenty of anime/manga art styles with pronounced/noticeable noses. Naoki Urasawa's art comes to mind, but so does Tetsuo Hara's and Araki's.

Big eyes are expressive and appealing. Also, the "traditional" anime/manga style is derived from western cartoons so big eyes make sense.
