yea.. i wonder if he actually focused on finishing the difference engine instead of trying to one-up it before it was even finished, he may have gotten more funding towards the bigger project
or maybe not. while the function of the difference engine was apparently quite important/useful (it's like a single-function calculator but that function was oft-used), there still can't have been many entities who could fork out the cost of such a machine to have one made for them. thousands of hand-crafted metal gearing wasn't cheap
