It's actually an homage to an old Mercury wagon casting done by Matchbox. They used the dogs as a way to avoid having a rear rivet go all the way up to the roof. Other matchbox wagons have used the same technique. The Volvo hilariously does it without omitting the rear rivet post, which sort of makes it really clear they're referencing the dogs and not just copying the technique.
