She was English, not British. inb4 England is in Britain. No one called her British. Well into the 20th century people talked of England more than Britain.

The name is older than you think. Dreadnought fought the Armada. She wasn't the biggest or the baddest of her time. She was outgunned to the order of 190 lb (160 lb vs 350 lb) by White Bear, and she was only about two thirds the size of White Bear, 450 tons bm vs 730 tons bm (or a little over one third at 400 tons vs 1000 tons, means of measurement vary). While the defeat of the Armada predates the rating system, she would have been a Third Rate galleon while White Bear would have been first First Rate. She was actually one of the smaller English main combatants in 1588.

She did have the advantage of being a few years younger than White Bear and of being designed by Matthew Baker who was one of the leading shipwrights of his time, possibly the greatest. He was born into the role, his father being one of the first four Master Shipwrights awarded patent by the Crown, in this case Henry VIII. Dreadnought may have been his second design.
