I think that's what mario is about, he bascially changes his genetic structure all the time, to get bigger or smaller or to even change to metal. Because of that, Mario has bad genes after all the transforming. He's basically not perfect at all, but is a poor example of genetics. But Mario doesn't care because to himself he's just his soul
