See, I blame this guy.
With a few exceptions, most black people up until the 60s/70s were decently respectable and did their best to integrate into mainstream society.
That 30s black dude playing jazz with a zoot suit? Now that's pretty cool, and even builds on current culture.
But KID DYYY-NO-MIIIITE! comes along and, even though he means well, pushes to America that it's cool to be shucking and jiving all the time.
Gotta be the 'Look at me! My very presence is a performance!' But he occasionally gets threatened by real thugs every so often and gets serious for about five minutes, so that's okay.
All downhill from there.
