It definitely got played a good amount in Japan especially arcades, and sold enough to keep making them. Don't know if you're the one who said it or not but I don't care to continue the argument further because it always goes the same way. It's an observable fact that they were played. You can go back and watch videos of arcades or tournaments, or watch tournaments from this year if you want to. With all that said, nobody except mindbroken brisketfags would deny the facts and claim nobody played guilty gear, so I have nothing more to say on the matter.
