I loathe Silver potentialniggers. You don't like him, you just *want* to like him. You have to spend hours analyzing 06 to convince yourself that it's actually a masterpeice, as if smashing themes and motifs together excuses his complete lack of substance. His entire character and debut game was a cynical attempt to recreate the success of Shadow and SA2 with the hero/ dark motifs. He was changed to a hedgehog with a name that starts with S because they wanted his game to be next to Sonic and Shadow. Outside of 06 the "hedgehog trio" doesn't exist. It doesn't even exist meaningfully in 06.
