as for whats stopping him from asking someone how to stop dying out i can only speculate
maybe when you become 35 years old you become convinced that you can't learn anything anymore or maybe its just a chilean thing, there are at least like 4 or 5 people on staff here who have soloed black mage in like >40 minutes where they couldnt just blow it up without needing to know everything the boss does, all he would have to do is keep his composure for long enough to ask questions without reverting into being a freak but he is just unable
trying to classify this with a specific mental illness would be doing a broad disservice to real sufferers of that illness but its not untreatable and he could learn good habits to play around it a little but alas
