Nah. Chara's role in the story is fine and getting rid of him or changing aspects of them would make it so you'd have to rewrite 90% of the story since nearly every major plot point revolves around their past.
Personally, I think most people are being overly sensitive, get upset because they feel attacked by the ending, and hate any form of opposition from the story. At this point I just think it's par for the course and so long as any character asks them to think about what they did or stands for a cause directly opposed to the players actions people will get mad and blame them for what happened even if the game itself tells them it doesn't matter and you are allowed to take the games message however you feel.
