Rare themselves already kinda did that back in the day, DK Racing (which was canned but whatever) showed that animal buddies like Expresso and Rambi were entire species as opposed to one individual. Even the DKC2 GBA remake had that Expresso Racing mini game with multiple Expressos the same way.
