Them being a troupe of actors happily explains the presence of the "baby" characters by just being their children. It also explains the spin offs, how Bowser usually plays the villain role but occasionally dabbles in heroism. Everything.

However the Donkey Kong stuff seems to explicitly not be stage plays, being the actual origin point for the Mario cast instead. Donkey Kong and his ilk SOMETIMES joins up with the Mario crew but almost always it's just DK himself. Cranky has never been playable in any Mario spin offs. He has a grudge against his grandfather!

Presumably Jumpman is Mario's grandpa, or is perhaps some unrelated identical stranger.

In the last thread, an anon made a good point about the Japanese not getting K. Rool. This also ties into why Nintendo took so long with getting a game like Bananza out the gate: Specifically because DKC was entirely western, mainly British, there was a culture shock when it came time for the Japanese to make DK games. Rare's DKC games on the GBA and Diddy Kong Racing DS all broke a million...but every game developed by Namco, Paon and even Nintendo/Nintendo Tokyo failed to do so. Retro's DK games did break a million and more, but you can tell there was still a lack of Rareware charm, mainly the British wit and charm that was sprinkled in every element from the designs, names and so on. Nintendo also had a closer hand in Retro's DK games and it shows. Cranky isn't supposed to be playable, he's a shittalker. Making him playable misses the point completely and the lack of Engaurde in the water levels also show a different design philosophy, opting for more of a 'gameplay' style with an air meter and spinning depleting your air.

Not that the Rare DKC games didn't have gameplay in mind, but it shows that you need more than gameplay for a game to really stick out. Even the touches like K. Rool's gold armor and left eye showcases what you're dealing with.

It was a great game that made me feel like I was a kid playing SM64 for the first time again, on top of which it had an unmatched level of polish and soul that had been missing from Nintendo games for ages. NSMB and 3DW are just basic barebones Mario games that don't evoke any emotion. I don't see how you can look at NDC Festival and say it didn't make a lasting impression. They literally brought back Pauline as a mainstay Mario character, made singing a central mechanic in Bananza, and brought back New Donk City because of how great an impact this one single segment made. Bananza has Pauline as a second lead character singing emotional vocal songs all thanks to this one 2 minute segment. There's nothing in all of 64, Sunshine, 3D World, or Galaxy that even approaches the level of the NDC Festival in terms of pure, genuine soul. Japanese cannot replicate British humor because the languages are structured in such a way that it simply doesn't translate. For example Japanese alphabet is phonetic, so the entire Kremling joke of spelling C words with a K makes no sense to them. Krusha and Crusher are spelled the same in Japanese because they don't have any redundant letters in their alphabet. In DKC when you """defeat""" K Rool and the "Kredits" start rolling with stuff like "Koding" and "Koncept Art" they fundamentally don't understand the joke (it's untranslated in the JP version because you literally can't translate it). Another example of Rareware humor is Gruntilda's rhyming. Japanese puns and rhyming work differently, so Grunty simply doesn't rhyme in the JP version. British humor is often verbal, so naturally Japanese cannot replicate it as well.

I do like that Mario Sluggers thought to give him an Aztec theme and DK Pilot was going to give him a Red Baron outfit. They don't want that for some reason though. At least not as the "mainline" image of the Toads as seen in the movie. They had Toadsworth in early concept art and he ended up removed.
