The retirees buy homes away from campus but the section 8 stuff was a problem for a while. It wasn't just that there was poor ghetto trash living next to college kids. It also was that students from Tuskegee and Alabama State were moving to Auburn and then commuting to their schools for classes while also partying and causing trouble in Auburn. The city put a moratorium on building new apartments for a while so the growth of the student population could catch up with the excess apartment supply. It's an interesting case study into the unintended consequences of implementing a large scale transit system.
