Those old posts from the game designer really hammered home why ps2 was so fun, and why any sequel will probably miss the mark. Fundamentally the game was made like a sandbox, and most actions you could do would contribute to your war effort somehow.
But because there's no pressure, no metric to optimize other than 'kill red dudes capture red bases', you can find your own fun. I remember I got my friend into it who didn't like competitive fps much, simply by having him be my tank gunner. Eventually he wanted to drive harassers, and we'd pull stupid stunts like finding the best rocks to ramp off into bases.
It was also cool how the aircraft worked, I played this quadcopter sim a while ago and couldn't stop thinking how cool something like this would be in an mmofps. Who knows, technology is improving, maybe some scrappy upstart studio makes the next best thing.
