Precisely my point. We had many historical documented sources placing lions alongside angels and dragons as mythical beasts, and just as many putting your average whales, fish, sharks, kelpies, seasnakes, octopi, and sirens as common sea creatures you'd expect while navigating X sea or Y river. All of this should be questioned through a lens of historicity, regardless of if it's a happy and ideal story or a miserable and horrific incident in time.
