I think it's one of those brilliant extra touches that give the character some of the extra zip.
Frankly, in a novel you can build nuance forever, in a film you have limited time to find ways to sneak in character-appropriate details, and in this case it's fucking perfect.
I'm always chuffed to know that Stephen King really loves this adaptation; he doesn't like most of them. Misery and Stand By Me, both directed by Rob Reiner, are amongst his favourites and also my own.
