>studio called ELF essentially creates the dating sim genre
>ELF has always had a tendency to make used goods heroines and NTR shit (YU-NO is full of NTR, Dokyuusei has implied NTR, failure routes in their games often had heroine you were pursuing choosing another man, etc.)
>the development of otaku subculture in the 90s moves away from love triangles and drama, newer eroge mostly absent of used goods
>ELF announces successor to one of their classic games
>otaku expects the main childhood heroine will be the designated pure heroine
>marketing indicates this will be the case
>she isn't
>she is your childhood friend but has a doctor boyfriend
>there's even a scene (pic related) where you the player watch from the bushes as she gets fingered by her boyfriend
>her plotline involves you becoming her boyfriend after she breaks up
The outrage wasn't about you, the player, being cucked. It's that you're expected to accept a two-timing slut as a good romantic option in a dating sim. Most of the normalfags who say "what's the big deal?" never play dating sims besides those which exist to mock the entire concept, like Class of '09. Normalfags like all narcissists hate feeling left out of the popular thing, and thus try to get past the gates built to keep them out while simultaneously mocking whatever they're trying to invade for how stupid it is at the same time.

Unlike what /a/ says, ELF didn't go bankrupt. But they did mostly switch over to making NTR games. They made Boku no Kanojo wa Gatenkei, among the kamige of NTR games. But across the genre you saw the entire concept of used goods/NTR plotlines die out after this game.
