The XA meters through the little transparent window above the lens. The user has minimal control of metering. Sometimes I will change the ISO dial below the lens to force an exposure correction but they honestly do a quite decent job on their own. When I picked up my XA (manual focus original) I ran a roll.of slide film through it to test the meter and it came out perfect. Picrel was on that test roll of Kodak E100
