Custom made fat cocked super beings. Essentially, they’re a marvel of bioengineering so advanced that even Emps had to turn to Chaos/some unseen entities for help in their creation. They’re Warp entities made flesh more or less. Horus is the one who chimped out and led a rebellion, a sort of Horus Heresy(TM), if you will, after finding out he and everyone were (technically) lied to by the emperor and that was the catalyst for the current Imperium’s state.
Ultimately the rebellion failed but it still dealt wide spread damage that the Imperium and wider galaxy is still reeling from to this day. About half of them joined Horus, and the other half remained loyal to the Emperor. Of the ones who joined him, most of them are now the servants of Chaos as Daemon Princes, but Horus himself was obliterated from existence by the Emperor in their final showdown which was so absurdly massive in scale that there’s canonically no real record of how it happened because it looked different to everyone. The other half vanished one by one, with only one or two that are pretty much confirmed to be dead, but the rest are heavily implied or confirmed to still be alive achieving their various goals. Guilliman and Lionel are the two that have returned and more or less rule the Imperium in the stead of their father (more so Guilliman).
