What you are unaware of is the the word cross is latin for Crux. That word was was taken from the words from Greek "Stauros" and "xylon." The Gospel writers all use xylon to refer to the staves or clubs that the mob carried when they came to take Jesus. (See Matthew 26:47, 55; Mark 14:43, 48; Luke 22:52.) The same word was used to describe Christ impaled on a Xylon, or a wooden club/stick.
They also used the word "Stauros" for Christ as well. Stauros means tree, pole, stake, pile where as Xylon just means wood. What you need to be aware of is that the idea of "cross" back then only meant stick and pole. Not two crossed sticks together. In fact, that's how the Romans use to execute prisoners, on poles, not actual crosses.
The concept of using a cross comes from Pagan religions. They used crosses in their religions so the apostates of the ancient world adopted it, like Christmas, to make it easier to convert pagans.
