The Pa Kent death and Zod necksnap are weirdly executed scenes, but I think people fixate on them too much. The ideas aren't as sacrilegious as they're made out to be, and few bad scenes never sunk a movie especially when they're bad in a funny way.

For me it's mostly that Man of Steel REALLY wants to be a scifi thriller and at a lot of points it feels more like you're watching Avatar, Mass Effect, or War of the Worlds. They focus so hard on the Krypton alien stuff and that's just not where the heart of the character is. It's also very weird to have a story that introduces Clark to his lost alien ancestry and then immediately subvert that with a Zod reveal. Doesn't really feel like Krypton went anywhere.

And it's not even a good alien movie. The set/costume design is pretty great, kudos to those teams, but the story is bog standard scifi blockbuster with a lot of weird decisions like making a big deal about Kal-El being a natural birth and Jor-El's hologram being so lifelike it's like the character never even died. And because it's a superhero flick, the main alien attack force is a handful of regular ass people with superpowers so they don't feel othewordly like their technology suggests.

Anime is the poster boy of being hilariously edgy and grimdark about fundamentally corny premises. I think it's the other way around. People who want
