Rick and Morty's mistake was the mishandling of its main cast and core character dynamics. They can claim "character development" all they want, but it's still a sitcom before anything else, which they fumbled by making the family more and more insufferable with each year. Now Morty feels directionless, and the comedy also took a hit for the same reason. If you can't craft funny jokes that flow naturally and instead resort to awkward sex jokes and over-the-top action scenes majority of the time, you've lost me.
