Spider-Man doesn't look silly, he looks cool, because he looks sinister. Even though his character isn't that, he looks it. His eyes look angry and his face is hidden, it's the same reason ninjas are considered cool. It's why characters designed only to be "cool" like Spawn, Deadpool, and Deathstroke, all steal from Spider-Man.
