I've always felt like harem worked best when it was a secondary, if still significant part of the plot. You tell something with an actual story and the harem doesn't really need such immediate resolution if any at all. From there you can safely lean into a harem end if you want or leave it to interpretation. Pic related chose the former but even if the anime didn't get that far the show still felt like it ended with some kind of resolution.
