I really like the Old Ones in Bloodborne. They have a goal that many humans can relate to (having a family), but they are so fundamentally different from humanity that trying to achieve that goal creates unbelievable suffering. Every single major Old One is trying to create an offspring in some way, from Oedon impregnating random women to the Moon Presence marking you as her kid (a bit of headcanon, but it fits). The Moon Presence herself is also the most "malicious" of the "gods", but that maliciousness translates to getting rid of her contemporaries.
As for my favorite Lovecraft story, I'd say The Colour Out of Space. I really enjoyed the focus on how the titular Colour affected the farmland and the family. IIRC, Lovecraft wrote it because he wanted to create a monster as alien as possible.
